Low Energy and Low Testosterone – What is their Relationship?

There are about five million men in the Unites States struggling with low testosterone. One of the most common characteristics of low testosterone in men is debilitating and chronic fatigue. When you have this kind of tiredness, it doesn’t improve, no matter how much sleep or rest you get, on its own.

Let’s look at the connection between low energy and low testosterone.

So, what exactly is the connection between fatigue and low testosterone? The hormone testosterone is produced mainly by the testes which in turn helps drive a man’s sexual desire. It also helps maintain muscle mass and generate energy. Testosterone levels decrease in all men as they age, normally between 1 to 2 percent per year after age 30. Energy and interest in sex could also start to drop a little as well, as we age. But remember, it is not normal for testosterone levels to get so low that your fatigue starts to affect your day-to-day activities or if it also begins to impact your interest in sex.

Why am I So Tired All the Time?

Being tired can obviously happen for many reasons. Maybe you just had a bad night’s sleep or had a tough day at work. Did you do some extra weight lifting at the gym today or maybe too much cardio work? Are just stressed out? These and many other things to make us tired, happen to us all.

Most men with fatigue issues will also begin to gain belly fat. Yes, I did – I am working on it. You may even feel like you are cold, while everyone else is warm. I think this explains why my temperature is always around 96.5 degrees, instead of the normal 98.6.

So, what can we do to battle low energy caused by low testosterone? Let’s have a look.

Battling Fatigue Caused by low Testosterone

Here are some suggestions for increasing your energy levels while battling low T:

Get Plenty of Uninterrupted Quality Sleep.

Getting the correct amount of sleep each-and-every night, must be one of your highest priorities. If you are not getting enough sleep, you can’t expect to be bursting with energy.

Not only will getting a quality 7 – 9 hours of sleep help boost your energy, it is also an important part of the things you can do to boost testosterone. This is because your levels of the hormone will peak during sleep, which directly affects hormone release, including testosterone. It can only be a harmonious relationship between sleep and proper hormone development, if you get your sleep!

According to a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology, broken or ‘fragmented’ sleep disrupts the normal nocturnal rise in testosterone. Sleep apnea is one thing that drastically disrupts your sleep. If you or your spouse say you snore a lot or stop breathing while sleeping, please get tested for sleep apnea right away. Treating sleep apnea will drastically improve your sleep and your energy and testosterone will improve. I know this to be true since I have been using a CPAP machine for a long time.

What’s the lesson here? Less sleep means low testosterone. And that equals zero energy!

You can Boost Energy and Testosterone, with Exercise.

I know, if I don’t have any energy, how am I supposed to exercise. Well, answer this question – do you enjoy not having the energy to do the things you enjoy? Do you want to go outside and play with your kids or maybe your grandkids? Do you want to take your dog for a walk every day? Maybe you would like to take a walk with your wife every day?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you owe it to yourself and your loved ones, to get off the couch and get started. Start a little at a time and do more and more as the days, weeks, months and even years go on. You will not regret it.

Some types exercise, naturally increases testosterone production. This is especially true of strength training. There is a ton of research out there that has shown that heavier lifting exercises such as squats, presses, deadlifts and pulls give you the best likelihood of hormone optimization, which leads to increase testosterone and therefore more energy.

The main is to find the types of exercise you enjoy. Doesn’t matter whether it is sports, cardio, high-intensity interval training, lifting weights or dancing, it can and will help optimize both testosterone and energy.

You Already Know – The Food You Eat is Critical.

No amount of sleep or exercise in the world will boost your energy levels without giving your body all the nutrients it needs to.

Foods that increase testosterone levels are generally high in nutrition but low in calories and should help form the basis of your healthy eating plan.

    I am recovering from a major injury, I have not been able to exercise for 5 months. Do you think taking a supplement would help me get back in my grove faster. I am just starting to use the tread mill and get some walking in. Not doing any outside stuff much.

    • Absolutely, that is exactly what I would suggest. These supplements are specifically to help with quicker recovery while also increasing low T if you have it.
      If you have normal levels, it will not produce too much. If you can’t get all the vitamins and minerals from the food you eat, then definitely try some supplements of your choice. If you want my suggestion, I suggest Prime Male since you are older, like me. I would also suggest some fish oil for the omega 3s you need. Here is the one I take:

  4. Curtis, I can only speak from what I see with my husband. He is not the tired one, I am. As such I know what can cause chronic tiredness in women, and never did I know that men can suffer from chronic fatigue too. Don’t get me wrong, I am not referring to fibromyalgia, which I know is a totally different condition. I am referring to the tiredness that you mention, the one that does not go away after a few days or weeks.
    Do you know what tests your doctor would prescribe to rule out different causes of tiredness in men, in order to land on the low T levels explanation?

    • The doctor will order a full blood workup to check cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar or A1C, and also testosterone levels. I went through all of that and more and discovered that I had Type 2 diabetes and low T. Not a great day for me. Please have your husband get checked out so he can start treating whatever is the issue. Don’t start any supplements until he does that.

  5. Great article Curtis, really detailed! The one thing I was curious about are supplements. Are there any negative side effects from long-term use? I heard that by taking testosterone supplements, eventually your body won’t naturally produce as much, therefore you need to use them if you ever want to maintain healthy levels of T. Any truth to that? Thanks for the info!

    • Yes, I have written other articles about the side effects of testosterone supplements. In general, they are all minor and only last a few days if you have any at all. I personally have not had any negative sided effects from the supplements I recommend. Your body is aided in making testosterone by these supplements. Depending on which ones you take, you do need to cycle them. I suggest you take them for two months and then stop for a week. Otherwise your body will eventually get used to them and will stop responding to them to produce more testosterone. There are some who suggest that you actually taken a different supplement each day during the week and that way you don’t have to cycle them. I am not in that camp.

    I have read, on several paleo/low carb/keto websites about how much better the guys feel when they eat clean. We can all do with more veggies and sunlight. And really is there anything that leafy greens can’t improve?

    I am glad that there are supplements to help guys get past the worst of it while they change their diet and lifestyle. Is it possible to take too many of the supplements? What are the downsides of that, if any?

    • As with anything, too much of a good thing is not so good. Too much of the supplements, even though all natural, can cause some side effects and you can see them in my article on exactly that subject, HERE.
      Also, if you take too much, your body will build up a tolerance quicker than normal and will eventually stop benefitting from them.
