Males who start to feel more and more grumpy on a daily basis may very well be suffering from low testosterone. Low testosterone is not diagnosed as frequently as it should be in men, and it can really change your mood, along with sapping you of the energy you need to function properly. In this article we are going to find out, does low testosterone cause anger.

What is Irritable Male Syndrome?

Do you often wonder, “Am I just grumpy in my older age, or is there something wrong with me?”? There are many reasons that you could be angry, but you won’t really know until you get some tests done. Your doctor can order blood tests to check everything out, including your testosterone levels.

Being generally irritable and experiencing a lot of mood swings, are common symptoms of andropause (low testosterone) in men. This is usually referred to as irritable male syndrome (IMS). IMS can also be caused by high cortisol levels and may cause men to become easily angered and can also  cause severe bouts of depression. I have experienced these symptoms myself.

Irritable Male Syndrome can have some negative effects on your relationships. Lets have a look at IMS and anger’s connection to low testosterone, along with the symptoms, causes, and treatment.

What are the Symptoms of Irritable Male Syndrome?

IMS can cause many different symptoms including things like depression, low self-confidence, a hard time focusing or concentrating, decreased energy levels, difficulty sleeping and/or sleep disorders like sleep apnea, and of course frequent irritability. If you have IMS as a result of low  testosterone, you will most likely find it more difficult to lose weight and have a harder time recovering after exercise as well as experience erectile dysfunction and a lower sex drive.

There are several more symptoms of IMS. Here is a pretty big list:

  • Hostility or anger.
  • Quick to argue.
  • Not being as warm and loving as normal for you.
  • Lots of Frustration with things in general.
  • Being more withdrawn than normal.
  • You may be more demanding than you were.
  • You get defensive quicker.
  • You feel a lot of Sadness.
  • Feelings of Dissatisfaction.
  • Super sensitive to things that wouldn’t normally bother you.
  • You are very Impatient.
  • Not feeling like socializing.
  • You may be more Sarcastic than usual.
  • Feelings of depressed.

Some of these are similar, but you get the point. Low testosterone and IMS are not good for you. It not only makes you miserable, but it makes everyone around you miserable. Recognizing these symptoms is the first step in getting help with these issues. You owe it to yourself and your partner to do what is necessary to get your quality of life back to normal. We need to know what causes all these symptoms.

What Causes Irritable Male Syndrome?

Turns out that IMS is most often caused by high levels of stress and/or low testosterone. Another cause can be increased levels of estrogen in men, which of course causes less testosterone. It is easy to understand a man would be much more irritable if he loses his sex drive or can’t perform when he needs too. We know that the main reason for this hormonal imbalance in men is the natural course of getting older. Too much body fat, especially belly fat in men can cause both low testosterone and that is generally followed by IMS symptoms. Fat cells produce too much estrogen from testosterone which results in lower testosterone levels. So, the higher the estrogen and the lower the testosterone, the more likely a male will develop IMS.

High levels of stress result in increased levels of cortisol, which also lowers testosterone and then the mood swings start.

There are also prescription medications that can cause hormonal imbalanced and low testosterone that then leads to more anger and frustration and IMS.

I don’t want you to think low testosterone is the only cause of IMS. There are definitely more causes that are not quite as common.

Here are some other not so common causes, according to the medical community:

  • Head injury: Obviously if you suffered a injury to your head, in can effect your personality and moods.
  • Substance abuse: Another obvious one. If you abuse drugs or alcohol, it is going to have an impact on your behavior and in some, anger.
  • Chemical imbalances: When you have a severe chemical imbalance that disrupts your neurotransmitters to the brain, it will tend to lead to mood swings, depression, or excessive anxiety.
  • Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): ADHD can make a person be easily distracted. They can get frustrated quickly. They can feel worthless and may not be able to cope with depression, resulting in mood swings and sometimes anger.
  • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPS): People with this disorder will have problems maintaining a stable relationship because of erratic  emotions.
  • Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED): This disorder can cause individuals to experience extreme, uncontrollable anger and can be capable of intense violence.

Bottom line is, if you experience these symptoms, go see a professional to determine which of these issues is causing your problems.

If you are a male over about 40, and you don’t have these additional issues, you most likely need to get your testosterone checked.

What is the Best Way to Diagnose Irritable Male Syndrome?

To best way to diagnose irritable male syndrome, is for your doctor to order a blood test to first examine your testosterone levels. Based on your testosterone levels, the doctor can determine whether you have a hormone imbalance that is a potential cause of your mood swings and anger issues. Your doctor will check for signs of any other medical conditions that may cause your symptoms. Erectile Dysfunction is another issue that can cause frustration and anger so they will check for that as well.

If your IMS is determined to be connected to low testosterone levels, your doctor may recommend Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT). This treatment involves getting regular injections of a synthetic hormone that should help restore vitality as well as alleviate other symptoms associated with low testosterone levels. But, TRT comes with a lot of potential really bad side effects, so make sure you inderstand what you are getting into before you agree to TRT. Natural supplements may be a better option for many men. Your doctor should tell you, you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes regular testosterone increasing exercises and a balanced diet that is not high in fat, sugars, and alcohol.

  1. Ok, this one threw me for a loop. I always associated anger with excessive testosterone, but your article suggests that it could actually be the other way around in some cases. I’m happy to now be introduced to ‘IMS’. I like that the solutions you identify are all most naturally attainable and focused on movement and nutrition. To your last point about denial, as they say, “the first step is awareness!”

    • Too much testosterone that is not controlled will also cause anger and very similar symptoms but for different reasons. You would not normally have low sex drive with too much T, so you wouldn’t be angry about that like you would with low T. High testosterone does not make you tired or fatigued so no reason to be angry for that.

      So, it really depends on the person’s situation.

  3. I was browsing around the net for something else and came across your post. I honestly didn’t know men suffered from any sort of mood swings type disorders. I’m just all too familiar with the female side of it and it seems society and retailers are way more focused on the female side than the male side. This is a really great read and  was educational for me. So low testosterone and IMS is generally something that creeps in and around middle-age or so? Maybe around the 50s? Thank you so much for the info!

    • Yes, IMS can occur with low testosterone at any age after puberty. Depends on the situation. Men naturally lose testosterone after around age 35 and it goes down 1 – 3% per year, so that is when to start watching for these symptoms.

  4. What a great article on Irritable Male Syndrome, I got here trying to learn what causes unexplained anger and mood swings in one of my close male relatives. I believe in his case Low testosterone may be the culprit because he is also battling weight gain even though he tries so hard to watch what he eats. Can eating the foods that increase testosterone alone help or would there be need to add supplements as well?
